Buying on a budget – or not
Budget – this is obviously your first consideration. Diamond earrings can go from a couple of hundred dollars to well into the millions of dollars. So, decide on your budget and look within that range. Now whilst it’s true that the values of a diamond is determined by the four C’s (cut, clarity, color and carat), when you’re buying a great pair of diamond earrings – you can make some compromises that could save you thousands of dollars but still get the brilliance and beauty that you’re looking for.
- If you have the means, look for excellent cut diamonds with G-H color and a clarity rating of what is called “eye clean”. These are reasonably priced diamonds that, in an earring, match the beauty and brilliance of much higher quality diamonds. This is achieved thanks to three factors: the cut gives the diamond an exceptional brilliance, when mounted in its setting a g-H colored diamond appears colorless and since it’s “eye clean”, any imperfections and flaws are invisible to the naked eye.
- If you have a budget, consider clarity enhanced diamonds. These are quality diamonds that have been processed to hide minor flaws and inclusions. This doesn’t effect the diamonds color, its clarity or its brilliance – just its price, up to 40% less!
- Another piece of advice for the buyer on a budget – all quality diamond earrings sparkle and dazzle. But remember that when worn, other elements, such as the lady’s hair or her skin tones, can distract or even partially hide the earrings. Also, diamond earrings are typically seen from a distance to three to four feet (just over a meter). At this distance, minute flaws and inclusions are undetectable. So consider a more reasonably priced one carat diamond rather than a smaller, more expensive half carat diamond.
- The correct setting is crucial for diamond stud earrings. You need to choose a setting that will display the diamonds to their best advantage and that will hold them straight and pushed forward. Of the three most common settings, crown, basket and 3 prong martini, we recommend either the basket or the martini setting. Unlike the crown setting which can cause the diamond to pull down on your ears and droop, the basket and martini settings can be used with the best effect. One final piece of advice. If your ear lobes are very soft and pliable, ask for a reinforcing disk that will fit, out of site, behind the ear to give the earrings greater support.
